Why Helping Veterans in Need Matters

In 2024, more than 1.2 million U.S. veterans lived below the poverty line—a sobering reminder that those who served our nation often struggle to meet basic needs.

  • Older veterans carry the heaviest burden, with poverty driven by fixed incomes, rising healthcare costs, and limited access to essential support services.
  • Younger veterans (ages 18–34) and female veterans are disproportionately affected, facing employment barriers, childcare responsibilities, and gaps in accessing earned benefits.
  • Veterans with service-connected disabilities endure even greater risks of poverty and unemployment, as physical and mental health challenges compound financial instability.

Behind each statistic is a story of sacrifice, resilience, and unmet need. Supporting veterans in crisis is not just charity—it is a moral obligation to honor their service and ensure they are always honored and remembered.

Helping veterans during the holiday season and colder months.

Veterans who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, or facing a well-being crisis endure especially harsh challenges during the holiday season and colder months—times that can deepen isolation and hardship.

The alarming data regarding the men and women who served in the U.S. Military facing poverty, food insecurity, or unstable housing—especially female veterans with children and those with service-connected disabilities are considered at high risk, underscoring the importance of helping veterans in need.

URB, inc. and our family of real estate professionals and businesses proudly continue our commitment to compassionate action by supporting the ’Tis the Season of Service campaign, an effort dedicated to uplifting veterans in need during the most challenging time of year.

From November 11 through December 31,
the effort will be one of hope, help, healing, and heartfelt connection for:

• Female veterans with children
• Female and male veterans experiencing homelessness
• Female and male veterans facing food insecurity

United in the service of those who served, we can make this season one of service, solidarity, and meaningful change.

The United Relief Foundation is a Northbrook, Illinois-based 501(c)(3) humanitarian aid organization dedicated to doing good deeds that make tangible, profound, and lasting differences in the lives of the men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces.
