The Greater Southwest Development Corporation (GSDC) Mission and Vision
GSDC Vision: A thriving Southwest Chicago community
GSDC Mission: To be a catalyst for creating and maintaining a vital Southwest Chicago community by empowering, building, and sustaining development that raises the quality of life for our neighborhood residents, businesses, and industries.
Here are some key aspects of GSDC:
Housing & Financial Counseling: GSDC offers free comprehensive housing counseling and education, including pre-purchase and foreclosure prevention counseling, financial literacy workshops, and first-time homebuyer classes.
Real Estate Development: They acquire, rehab, and repurpose properties for community good, including identifying properties for redevelopment, completing feasibility studies, and securing financing.
Senior Housing: GSDC provides high-quality affordable housing for seniors, managing close to 250 units at three locations.
Business Advising: They offer guidance and support to business owners and entrepreneurs, helping them start, grow, or transition their businesses.
Community Development: GSDC provides various services that build capacity within the community and support the overall beautification of the Southwest Side.
GSDC was formed in 1974 as a result of organizing efforts to hold banks accountable for the growing disinvestment in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood.
GSDC headquarters is located in the heart of the inspirational Chicago Lawn neighborhood, a community bound largely by the impressive 323-acre Marquette Park founded by former educator-turned-real estate developer Professor John Frederick Eberhart.
